Celtic’s domination on the top of the table has continued even after the departure of Brendan Rodgers. They have pulled off some last gasp wins and showed that they are still resilient and strong enough to be mostly untroubled in their title pursuit.
The club though is going to have a substantial upcoming summer transfer window ahead as quite a few players could leave the Parkhead because their contracts are set to expire. Among them, on loan players like Oliver Burke and Timothy Weah have created a positive impact for the Hoops up front. However, the club will have to dive in the transfer market again to sign a striker in the future as Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths (once he returns) would be the only forward options available to the club.
Edouard has turned out to be slightly injury prone and Griffiths isn’t good enough to be the no. 1 striker. So signing a forward would be on the agenda of the club. Amidst all this, former Tottenham Hotspur star Darren Bent recently indicated that he would like to experience Scottish football and would be willing to move to Scotland like his former partner Jermain Defoe.
The former English striker talked about this on Sky Sports and said, ”There were a few conversations. I think Celtic, back in the day. But the timing wasn’t great for me. Obviously, because things were going pretty well down here.”
“But it’s something I’ve looked at. It’s obviously a league that’s fascinating. When you talk about Rangers and Celtic you talk about arguably two of the biggest clubs in world football. It’s definitely something( Playing in Scotland) I would do, yeah.”
The 35-year-old striker is currently associated with no club and could be snapped by the Hoops on a free transfer. However, we for one think that the Bhoys shouldn’t sign him as Bent wouldn’t be able to add much to the current Celtic squad.
It’s true that Bent possess plenty of experience, but the forward is out of football for a while now as he last played for Burton Albion in 2018. Therefore we aren’t too sure about the striker’s match fitness. Anyway Celtic would be better off signing some long term option as they cannot just keep on bringing in strikers on a short term basis every season.
Defoe hasn’t exactly fired on all cylinders after moving to Ibrox and it’s never easy for footballers to get back to their best once they have stopped training regularly. There is no need for Lennon to go after this striker who has over 100 Premier League goals to his name.
