Rangers’ season is as good as over as they were knocked out by Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals. They dropped more points in the Premiership against Kilmarnock and Celtic are now 10 points clear on the top of the table.
Therefore Rangers and Gerrard must rethink and shuffle some of their strategies for the upcoming season. The gaffer has indicated that the club would look to add players in the transfer market in certain key areas. Recently former England striker Darren Bent gave an indication that he would be willing to follow Defoe’s footsteps and have a stint in Scotland with one of the Scottish giants.
The former Tottenham striker said, ”There were a few conversations. I think Celtic, back in the day. But the timing wasn’t great for me. Obviously, because things were going pretty well down here. But it’s something I’ve looked at. It’s obviously a league that’s fascinating. When you talk about Rangers and Celtic you talk about arguably two of the biggest clubs in world football. It’s definitely something I would do, yeah.”
Rangers might lose Alfredo Morelos in the summer as the Colombian forward has garnered a lot of interest in the past few months. There is no that Rangers would be willing to sell him for the right price so Gerrard might be after a forward in the summer transfer market.
However, Bent is already way past his prime, and his last footballing action came last year when he was on loan with Burton Albion from Derby County. The 35-year-old has been without a club since the summer of 2018, and we feel that there is no point in going after a striker who hasn’t played much competitive football for months now.
It’s true that Bent has vast experience and his ability in front of the goal cannot be doubted as he has over 100 Premier League goals to his name. But he will need to work extremely hard to get himself match fit to contribute to Rangers.
Moreover, the Gers have someone like Jermain Defoe for that, and we don’t see Gerrard pulling strings to sign another one of his former international team-mates. The manager would be better off signing a striker who could have a long stint at Rangers as both Lafferty and Defoe are in their thirties, and the future of Morelos is in doubt. Rangers should generate a healthy sum of money if they do sell Morelos and they would be able to sign a better forward than Bent who seems keen to play in Scotland.
