According to a recent report by the Daily Mirror, Real Madrid are plotting a move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen in the summer. The same source has revealed that Los Blancos are planning to go on a spending spree under their new manager Zinedine Zidane and have identified the Danish talent as their primary target for the summer transfer window.
The Galacticos have a history of acquiring top talents from Spurs as evidenced by the acquisitions of Gareth Bale and Luka Modric in recent years. Eriksen’s current contract at White Hane Lane is set to run out at the end of next season, and the Mirror reports that Spurs are desperately trying to tie him up on a new long-term deal.
The Danish international has been a persistent presence in the Tottenham midfield over the past few campaigns and has been one of the main reasons why the club has become UEFA Champions League regulars under the stewardship of Mauricio Pochettino.
The 27-year-old has made 38 appearances for Spurs this term, scoring seven goals while grabbing 12 assists across all competitions. The former Ajax starlet is also vastly experienced at the international level having represented his nation, Denmark in 85 international matches while scoring 25 goals for them in the process.
Eriksen can be considered as one of the best playmakers in the Premier League, and his numbers have been quite consistent over the past few seasons. Spurs have performed so well in recent years due to the Danish midfielder’s incredible partnership with Harry Kane as the duo has struck up a very productive collaboration in the opposition half.
The departure of the Dane could leave Spurs with a huge hole to fill in midfield. In today’s inflated market, it will be difficult for Pochettino to bring in a suitable replacement for Eriksen, so Spurs simply cannot allow their prized asset to leave at the end of this campaign.
Pochettino should try everything in his power to convince the Middelfart born talent to commit his long-term future to the club. Eriksen might also benefit from staying at the North London club as they are taking great strides towards winning silverware under Pochettino’s tutelage. Hence, it might be best for both parties if the Dane ends up staying at Tottenham beyond this summer.
