Rangers are back to the drawing board as they are now 10 points adrift from the top of the table and it seems likely that Steven Gerrard’s first year at Ibrox is going to end up trophyless. The pressure is on the gaffer, but we expect him to keep his job for the time being. However, another season like this could mean his time could come to an end in Glasgow.
To improve, Rangers need to dive in the transfer market once again and make certain key acquisitions. Last summer, the squad was completely overhauled, and wholesale changes were made to the roster. This summer we don’t expect the Bears to make many acquisitions, but they need to find certain players who will form the backbone of this team.
Former Rangers midfielder and Scotland international Barry Ferguson believes that the Gers need to sign Ryan Kent on a permanent basis in the upcoming season. He was quoted as saying (Bristol Post), ”Ryan Kent is another who should stay. If Gerrard can get him for anywhere between three or four million pounds as has been quoted then that looks like smart business to me.
“That kid has proved that he belongs in a Rangers shirt so Gerrard would be buying the tried and tested. But the manager still needs to increase quality in other areas of his team. One more striker, one more midfielder and another defender. Guys who can become the real spine of his team.”
This sentiment has been on everyone’s mind for quite some time now as Ryan Kent has become a crucial player for the Gers. But the winger still has a long term contract with Liverpool and it remains to be seen what kind of price the Merseyside club would ask for the Englishman.
Rangers meanwhile have already signed Jordan Jones on a pre-contract deal and Jamie Murphy should also be back available for selection by next season. To go with that, Rangers are also being linked (The Scottish Sun) with a move for Motherwell’s winger Jake Hastie who has caught the eye in the last few months. So Rangers have ample cover for the left wing spot especially if they also go on to sign Hastie.
So the signing of Ryan Kent might take a backseat now even though the 22-year-old has done well and has improved a lot in the last few months. Rangers might want to spend that money on improving other positions. So as of now, we think Kent’s permanent deal hangs in the balance and there is every chance that Rangers might not go for him in the summer transfer window.
