It was a pulsating contest between Manchester United and Southampton as the encounter went down to the wire with the Red Devils getting over the line against the Saints by a 3-2 scoreline.
Every goal in this match was a delight to watch. Yan Valery scored the first one with a scorcher off his right foot as the ball went through the hands of De Gea to end in the back of the net. In the second half, Andreas Perrera brought his side back in the contest with a long ranger that brought the whole ground on their feet.
Romelu Lukaku gave them the lead as he pushed the ball in the net with absolute precision. The Saints came back into the match with a perfectly taken free kick from James Ward Prowse but it was the big Belgian who had the last laugh as the Red Devils got the winner in “Fergie Time” (well almost!) to keep Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s unbeaten run in the Premier League intact.
Here is how the Manchester United players were rated from their win against Southampton.
David De Gea: 6
Not the best of outings for the best goalkeeper in the Premier League as he conceded two goals on the night. However, to be fair, there was nothing that he could have done to prevent them from going in.
Ashley Young: 6
Good athletic performance from the right-back as he kept trying to get the ball up the pitch as much as possible. Looked fatigued towards the end though.
Victor Lindelof: 6
Kept his composure throughout the first half but lost it in the second. Stopped the opposition strikers from pushing forward.
Chris Smalling: 7
A good performance overall. Kept the opposition attackers at bay with his physical presence in the box.
Luke Shaw: 6
Went up the pitch with the ball whenever the chance was there. Looked a bit caught up while backtracking.
Paul Pogba: 6
Kept tormenting the opposition players with his ball controlling skills in the middle of the pitch. Missed a penalty right at the end of the match.
Andreas Pereira: 7
What a strike from the Brazilian ace! The screamer could easily go into the race to win the goal of the season award. Set up the second goal for Lukaku as well.
Scott McTominay: 6
A composed performance from the young midfielder. Once again showed that he has got a very matured head on his young shoulders when it comes to decision making.
Alexis Sanchez: 5
Not much was seen from the Chilean. Left the field with an injury in the second half.
Marcus Rashford: 6
Kept deceiving the opposition defenders with his classy footwork throughout the match. Came close to scoring but squandered the chance.
Romelu Lukaku: 8
Showed why he is so highly rated in European football as he notched up back to back braces. Showed awesome close control with the ball to create space out of nowhere and scored both the goals as he found the corner of the net to perfection.
Substitutes
Diogo Dalot: 6
Did well in his limited time on the pitch as he came on for Sanchez.
Fred: 6
Provided the assist for Lukaku’s second goal.
Tahith Chong: NA
Played too little to warrant a rating.
