According to the latest reports from the Chronicle, Newcastle United scouts are spending plenty of time in Italy looking for talents, and Napoli’s striker Roberto Inglese is one player to have caught their eye. The Magpies showed ambition in the January transfer market as they broke their long-standing transfer record by signing Miguel Almiron. It seems like United’s recruitment drive isn’t going to end there as they have been linked with quite a few talents since then.
Inglese is currently on loan with Serie A outfit Parma, and he has managed eight goals for them in the Italian top flight this season. The 27-year-old forward has struggled to get going with Napoli after he joined them for a fee of £9m in 2017. The striker had spent time on loan with Chievo Verona before and is now with Parma until the end of the season.
The Toon have got Salomon Rondon as their first choice striker, and the Venezuelan is currently on loan from West Bromwich Albion. Apart from that, Joselu has failed to find his feet at St. James’ Park, so we expect the Tyneside outfit to sign a striker.
There is no doubt that Rondon would be Benitez’s first choice given his performance this season and the kind of impact he has had for the Toon. The 29-year-old has done everything which Benitez would need from his striker. Rondon’s hold up play has been fantastic, and he has been clinical in front of goal.
Inglese is in a similar mould as he is also a perfect target man to start up front. The Italian forward isn’t easily shrugged off the ball, and his aerial ability is his major asset. What the striker slightly lacks is pace so that could be one of the downers of signing him.
Nevertheless, he should suit United’s playing style well and one can understand why they are keeping tabs on a player like him. It’s clear that his future lies away from Napoli as he has never made a single appearance for them. However, Newcastle United are not going to get a clear run in to sign this 27-year-old as Parma do have a buyback option included in their loan deal for the striker. So as of now, Newcastle could be the second favourite in our eyes. Benitez should anyway look to pull off a deal for Rondon first as he has settled in well at the club.
