Rangers will be disappointed that they didn’t manage to stay in the title race after the winter break as they went in level with Celtic after the derby win. It’s clear that even after a massive overhaul, this Rangers team lacks quality in certain areas. The Bears will once again have to dive in the transfer market to solve some of their shortcomings.
Gerrard recently explained his plans for the summer and said (The Scottish Sun), ”We are doing everything we can to make Rangers a winning team but it can’t happen overnight. There needed to be a squad overhaul when I arrived. There will be change and better players to add more quality but I don’t expect the same in terms of numbers. We need a bit of magic and a few key additions.”
So it’s clear that Rangers will not make a similar amount of signings as they did in the summer of 2018. One thing that Gerrard mentioned was signing someone with a bit of magic and certain key positions that need to be looked after. We try and identify what those three positions could be.
Attacking midfielder/Playmaker
The fact that the gaffer blatantly mentions about the lack of magic suggests that the club will go after a creative playmaker in the summer. The Gers have failed to open up defences against teams who have sat back and defended in numbers. Rangers probably missed a trick by not looking at this area in the January transfer window itself. Instead, they went on to sign Steven Davis from Southampton who has failed to get going in his second stint at Ibrox.
Centre Backs
The Bears are set to lose the services of Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley as their contracts are set to expire in the summer. Moreover, Connor Goldson has also looked shaky on occasions and it seems like Gerrard doesn’t trust Nikola Katic much. Therefore we can expect the Bears to go after two centre backs in the summer.
Forward/ Versatile attacker
With Alfredo Morelos’ sale on the cards, Rangers might spend a good chunk of their transfer budget on signing a forward. They might want to sign a player who can even play on the flanks when required as Ryan Kent’s loan deal is also set to expire.
We expect the manager to go after Kent as well but they would be better off signing someone who can play even through the middle as a forward. Winger Jamie Murphy should be back for next season, so the Gers are slightly more covered in the wide areas.
