Rangers’ season came to an end as they bowed out of the Scottish Cup after suffering a 2-0 defeat at home against Aberdeen. This is the second time that the Dons have got the better of the Gers in cup competitions this season and it is back to the drawing board for Gerrard and Co as Rangers don’t have much to play for this season.
The atmosphere was electric to begin with, but the Dons got off to a perfect start as Rangers shot themselves in the foot. Glen Kamara misplaced a pass to Niall McGinn who made no mistake with the finish. That remained Aberdeen’s only attempt of the half as Rangers piled on the pressure after that. However, they lacked the cutting edge to go past Aberdeen, and the Dons went in at half time with a lead.
Aberdeen added the second around the hour mark as Rangers’ midfield, and the defence was caught ball-watching. All it took was a swift counter-attack from Dons to catch Rangers out. Gerrard’s men never really looked like scoring and Aberdeen were deserved winners on the day.
Allan McGregor 4
Couldn’t prevent the goals but he cannot be blamed for either of them.
Joe Worrall 5
Can’t fault him for the goals. Worked hard and did his defensive job alright.
Connor Goldson 3
Got sucked in on the flank for the second goal which created space in the centre. His decision making has often been awful.
Borna Barisic 4
Was again poor with his crosses. Halliday should be starting over him.
James Tavernier 5
Whatever attacking output Rangers were managing was coming from right and Tavernier played a decent role in that. However, his crossing was poor throughout the game.
Ryan Jack 4
Lacked a bit of energy and composure in midfield. Couldn’t create many opportunities while going forward.
Glen Kamara 3
Played a poor square ball early on which Tavernier wasn’t expecting and McGinn pounced on it. That was a body blow for the home side, and they never recovered from it.
Scott Arfield 4
Was average at best. Couldn’t provide much while going forward.
Daniel Candeias 3
Extremely poor in the final third as he overhit quite a few passes. His touch was also well off. Poor performance from a generally reliable player.
Ryan Kent 4
Like most of his team-mates, he failed to find the right ball in the final third.
Alfredo Morelos 2
Got his mandatory yellow card but not his goal. Some atrocious dives and play acting from the Colombian. Isn’t helping his cause if he wants a big summer move with performances like these. Took one decent long-range attempt late in the game.
Substitutes
Jermain Defoe 5
Got in some good positions but couldn’t finish.
Kyle Lafferty 5.5
Did his job as a target man.
Steven Davis N/A
Wasn’t involved much after coming on.
