Manchester City are on a roll in every competition they are playing in this season. Every player has been contributing to his fullest in the pursuit of the coveted “quadruple” this season, and Pep Guardiola should be more than happy with the effort his players have put in so far. However, he is also looking to add more steel to his squad and has been eyeing a few new players, one of them being the Portuguese defensive ace Francisco Reis Ferreira, better known as Ferro, as per the Portuguese news outlet Record.
The Portugal U21 international has been a revelation at his current club Benfica and has attracted the attention of a number of other big-name clubs as well, one of them being Manchester City’s closest rivals in the race to win the Premier League trophy this season, Liverpool. The Reds have been hot on the heels of the Portuguese starlet for some time now and reportedly have already seen their initial advances to sign the player getting rejected by Benfica.
The Citizens have done well to keep their composure high in every department this season, but their defence seems to have lacked the depth on a few occasions this season. The latest example of this is the quarter-final match against Swansea City in which the Welsh side took the City defence to swords and scored two quick goals in the first half of the game.
The likes of Aymeric Laporte and Nicolas Otamendi have been found crumbling under pressure quite a few times this season while John Stones and Vincent Kompany have struggled to stay fit.
This situation seems to have made the manager of the reigning Premier League champions sceptical about his defence, and he might look to add someone like Ferro to beef up his backline. Though the 21-year-old has made only ten appearances in total for the senior squad, he seems to have done enough to impress Guardiola.
Apart from being a very capable centre-back, the player is also known for his strength in the air that makes him very dangerous from set-piece situations. His record of three goals in the ten matches he has played so far for the Portuguese side provides a strong argument in establishing him as one of the future stars in the defence for his country and club.
Given the fact that Guardiola is one of the best managers in Europe and that Manchester City might win everything this season against all odds, strengthening the core of the squad for the future of the club would be a very wise idea from the Spaniard’s point of view. The signing of Ferro would be a big step in that direction, and the Citizens should get it done without much delay.
