Tottenham Hotspur squandered a chance to consolidate their place in the top three with a win against Southampton as they were handed a shock defeat by Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men. Spurs took the lead via Harry Kane in the first half after putting a lot of pressure on the Southampton defence. But two quick goals from Yan Valery and James Ward-Prowse, both of whom scored in back of back games for the Saints, was good enough to get their side over the line against the north London club.
This comes as a shock result for Tottenham as they have now faced three defeats and one draw in their last four matches in the Premier League. On the other hand, the win gives the South Coast club a huge boost in their pursuit to stay afloat in the top flight for another season.
Here is how the Tottenham players were rated from their defeat against Southampton.
Hugo Lloris: 6
Had a decent first half and made a few good saves to deny the Southampton attackers. However, with the defenders not being able to keep the opposition at bay, Lloris conceded two goals in the second half, none of which looked stoppable for him.
Danny Rose: 5
Had a good first half going up the pitch as he looked to deliver some good balls in the box. Lost his composure in the second half completely and let Stuart Armstrong’s pass go through his legs as Valery put the ball in the back of the net without any resistance to score the first goal for Southampton.
Jan Vertonghen: 6
Looked to keep the attackers at bay with his timely interceptions. Was completely deceived by Armstrong’s lethal pass across the face of the goal to find Valery which did not help his side’s cause.
Davinson Sanchez: 6
A solid effort from the Colombian in the first half of the match as he tackled the attacking threat from the Saints with ease. The second half, however, saw him getting tired and let the opposition make runs into the box as he could not prevent them from scoring.
Kyle Walker-Peters: 6
Made some excellent runs into the opposition half with the ball but the delivery was missing. Could have been sent off for his tackle on Armstrong but the referee chose to show him a yellow card.
Eric Dier: 6
Made some important interceptions to break down the Southampton attacks in the middle of the pitch. Looked a bit fatigued in the second half though.
Moussa Sissoko: 5
Was beaten all hands up by the link-up play between James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond on a number of occasions. Earned a yellow card for deliberately bringing down Redmond outside the box to round off a frustrating performance.
Christian Eriksen: 7
Was unlucky to hit the bar twice in the first half. Put a number of good balls in the danger area with no one to take advantage of them.
Dele Alli: 6
Set up Kane with a brilliant lob over the head of Jan Bednarek and Jannick Vestergaard to bring up the only goal for his side. Looked threatening in the first half but was kept under check in the second half by Valery and Hojbjerg.
Lucas Moura: 5
His passes looked inaccurate throughout the match. Could not get the shots on target or at least threaten Angus Gunn with the shots.
Harry Kane: 6
Tried his best to get the better of the Southampton defence and did that effectively in the first half with a decent finish to put his side in the lead. Looked lacklustre in the second half though.

Heung Min Son: 5
A rare poor performance from the South Korean as Vestergaard and Bednarek did not let him take the shots on goal.
Ben Davies: NA
Played too little to warrant a rating.
Fernando Llorente: NA
Played too little to warrant a rating.
