According to the latest reports from Sky Sports, Steven Gerrard is facing an uphill task to sign Ryan Kent again in the upcoming summer. The Liverpool loanee has had an impressive stint at Ibrox, and he has even been nominated for their player of the season award. However, reports add that Liverpool are unlikely to send the player on loan again and their preferred option is to sell the player.
Up until now, the price tag for Kent was unclear, but Sky sources now reveal that Liverpool value the English winger at £7m. That price tag is a sizeable one for the Bears, and it remains to be seen whether the club would be willing to shell out that kind of amount on Kent in the summer.
Kent has himself indicated on numerous occasions that he would love to stay at Glasgow permanently. One can understand why the winger might want the move as he has settled in at the club well and his chances of making it into the Liverpool senior team looks bleak at the moment.
Gerrard is definitely going to face a dilemma as he needs to add reinforcements in other positions as well and spending £7m on one player could be a bit too much for the club. Rangers might have signed 15 players last summer, but quite a few of them were free transfers and loan signings. In all honesty, the club didn’t spend much to acquire that many players.
The club can probably look to finance Kent’s deal by selling Alfredo Morelos for top money. But Gerrard also needs to save up enough to sign a quality replacement for the Colombian. Moreover, wide areas are one of the places where the club has plenty of cover even if someone like Kent departs from the club in the summer.
Rangers have already signed Jordan Jones on a pre-contract deal, and Jamie Murphy is also going to be available next season after his injury misfortune. Both of them are left wingers, and apart from them, Gerrard also has Glenn Middleton at his disposal. The Bears are also heavily linked with a move for Jake Hastie from Motherwell who is also a left winger. Therefore however harsh it might sound, Gerrard can afford to let Kent’s signing slip away. We believe, the Gers would be better off signing a quality attacking midfielder or a defender in the summer with that kind of money.
The move has nothing to do with Kent’s performance this season as the 22-year-old has been really impressive. However, if the club wants to have a better overall balanced team, then maybe Gerrard would be better off overlooking Kent after Liverpool named their price tag for the winger.
