Reports from the Express came out that, Rangers were keeping tabs on Millwall’s fullback Mahlon Romeo. The report also adds that the player is going to be available for free as he is in the last few months of his contract.
However, we found Millwall’s official site posting in June of 2018 that Romeo had committed his long term future at the club. Therefore it’s still unclear on what the contract situation of the player is right now. However, if he’s available on the market, then Celtic should be lining up for his signature.
The Hoops have been after a right back for quite some time, and they have been linked with plenty of names in the past few windows. Celtic did manage to pull off a smart signing in the form of Jeremy Toljan, but the drawback is that the German has just joined on a six-month loan. Therefore the club again needs to dive in the market in a few months to sign a right back.
Mikael Lustig’s form has been dwindling for quite some time now, and the Swedish international is going to be out of contract in the summer. There is no indication yet that the Hoops would offer him a new deal. Moreover, Cristian Gamboa is also in the final few months of his contract so three right backs could depart Parkhead in the summer.
Romeo has been a regular for The Lions in the Championship, and the 23-year-old is known for his terrific work rate and attitude. Defensively, the Antigua and Barbuda international reads the situation well and is a tough tackling fullback. Therefore he should suit the Scottish game well.
However, one of his drawbacks is his attacking outlet. In over 120 appearances for Millwall, Romeo has managed just four assists. Now those stats are slightly adulterated for the fullback as Millwall have had to spend most of their time defending as they sit on the 20th spot in the Championship right now. Nevertheless, he needs to improve on the attacking front to be a significant success at Celtic Park.
Celtic should probably try to sign Toljan permanently and Romeo can be kept as a second choice option. If they miss out on the German, then Romeo can be used as a first choice option as well. The 23-year-old has decent potential, and that is the reason why Premier League club like West Ham United are also interested. Therefore Celtic needs to join this race and get one over Rangers and the Hammers to solve their right back woes.
