According to a recent report by the Liverpool Echo, German football expert Mark Lovell has tipped Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to sign his former player Mario Gotze from Borussia Dortmund. When questioned about whether the German talent was on Klopp’s radar (via Liverpool Echo), Lovell said, “I was watching the Mario Gotze documentary recently.
“Mario Gotze is coming back into form for Borussia Dortmund and there is a weight of evidence from that documentary that he will play with Klopp or under Klopp again.
“So that’s one name I can definitely give you. There’s a real strong fancy from this side (Germany) that Mario Gotze and Jurgen Klopp will link up – whether that’s at Liverpool, remains to be seen.”
Lovell’s recent words reveal that Klopp and Gotze might cross paths again in the future, but it might not be at Anfield. The fact remains that the German midfielder is under contract at Dortmund until the summer of 2020. Moreover, the Reds have no reason to want a player of Gotze’s ability at Merseyside.
Liverpool have already got talented players such as Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita, Xherdan Shaqiri, Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who can all feature in the number 10 position. The 26-year-old is a player on the decline as evidenced by his numbers this season. Gotze has made 26 appearances for Lucien Favre’s team this term, scoring four goals while grabbing six assists across all competitions.
His form has improved a lot in recent weeks, but it is hard to look past his shortcomings over the past couple of years which has mainly been down to injuries. Gotze’s last productive campaign was way back in the 2014-15 Bundesliga season when he scored 15 goals for Bayern Munich across all competitions.
There is no doubt that the German talent needs regular game time if he wants to reignite his career in European football so his best bet would be to stay at the Signal Iduna Park for now and honour the remainder of his contract.
It is no secret that Klopp could benefit from acquiring a new playmaker during the summer transfer period, but there are far better options than Gotze in the market. Hence, it would be foolish for Liverpool to opt for a player struggling to relive his glory days.
The Merseyside giants are better off splashing the cash on a more proven talent who can help them win some silverware in the coming years.
