According to the recent comments made by former France player Robert Pires (via Manchester Evening News), Olympique Lyonnais forward Memphis Depay wants to make a return to the Premier League. In a recent interview with Bwin, Pires said, “I think Depay wants to come back to the Premier League and he feels he has unfinished business in England. He’s unhappy at Lyon and has already stated his ambitions to leave this summer for a big club in Europe.”
The ex-Arsenal player went on to add (via Bwin), “It didn’t work out for him at Manchester United and Depay is a very proud player. He perhaps feels he wasn’t given a chance to perform and earn the right to stay longer considering he was so young and showed glimpses of undoubted potential.
“Depay might want to return to Manchester United or he might be motivated to prove them wrong by performing for one of their rivals in the Premier League.
“It will be interesting to see what happens this summer.”
Pires’ recent comments should be encouraging if any Premier League club wants to sign the Dutch international in the summer. The possibility of Depay moving back to Old Trafford seems unlikely at the moment but things change quickly in football. If Ed Woodward and co. are open to the idea of giving the winger another shot at the red half of Manchester, then a deal might take place. However, for now, Pires’ words should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Depay boasts outstanding pace and dribbling ability which makes him one of the most feared wingers in the Ligue 1. The 25-year-old has been in scintillating form for Lyon this season and has caught the eye with a string of match-winning displays at the Lyon Olympic Stadium. He has featured in 35 matches for Bruno Génésio’s side this term, finding the back of the net seven times while also providing 13 assists across all competitions.
His record this season indicates that the Dutch talent has matured as a player. He was guilty of being selfish in front of goal during the early years of his playing career. However, the fact that he has more assists than goals in this campaign prove that he has developed his game for the better.
However, Ole Gunnar Solkjaer has currently got a plethora of options in attack with players such as Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Juan Mata and Alexis Sanchez all vying for a place in the Man United first-team. So unless they decide to move one of them on in the summer, it doesn’t seem like they would be interested in a reunion with Depay any time soon.
