Barcelona have emerged victorious in a hard fought battle at the Santiago Bernabeu courtesy of an Ivan Rakitic goal around the 26th minute. The Croatian made a well-timed run after having a give and go with Sergi Roberto, even deceiving Sergio Ramos in the process.
The Catalan giants have imposed their authority on the La Liga title with their win at the Bernabeu on the night. Barcelona now have a nearly impossible to turn 12 point lead over the side from the Spanish capital.
After sending Madrid packing from the Copa del Rey just 72 hours ago, Barca have also ended Real Madrid’s chances of winning the Primera Division trophy. The only piece of silverware on offer for Santiago Solari and Co. is the UEFA Champions League, which they would aim to win for the fourth successive time in a row.
Ernesto Valverde has won three of the four El Clasicos which have been played this season and lost none, which speaks volumes of his managerial capabilities. The former Bilbao manager would be impressed with his side’s performance on the night.
Here’s how Barcelona fared in their one-goal victory over Real Madrid –
Marc Andre Ter Stegen – 8/10
Was far less troubled today and did not have much to do in all honesty. Whenever called into action, Stegen acted promptly.
Sergi Roberto – 8/10
Was instrumental in keeping the lethal Vinicius Junior under control. Even played a major role in Ivan Rakitic’s goal, which was important in sealing the three points.
Gerard Pique – 9/10
Cometh the game, cometh the man! After having lots of trouble throughout the season, Pique has all of sudden revived his season with two amazing displays in the El Clasico’s.
Clement Lenglet – 8/10
The ex-Sevilla man went about his business well. Did not leave many reasons for Valverde to complain about here.
Jordi Alba – 8/10
Had a rather quiet game going by his usual standards. However, he was there wherever needed.
Ivan Rakitic – 9/10
Without a doubt the man of the match on the day. The Croatian scored the game’s only goal which was just enough at the end of the day.
Sergio Busquets – 8/10
A very Sergio Busquet type performance. Quiet, calm, composed and confident would be the best words to describe the World Cup winners’ night.
Arthur Melo – 8/10
Showed shades of Xavi in his performance on the evening. It certainly did not feel like his first appearances at the Bernabeu. He was confident with the ball at his feet.
Lionel Messi – 8/10
Had a very quiet evening. A good sign for Valverde that he was not even required to step in.
Luis Suarez – 7/10
Failed to have much impact on the game. A lot more was expected from the former Liverpool man after his brace a couple of nights ago.
Ousmane Dembele – 8/10
Look dangerous every time he had the ball at his feet, something which would keep any defence traumatised.
Substitutes
Arturo Vidal – 8/10
Was a very imposing figure post his arrival in the centre of the park.
Philippe Coutinho – 7/10
Did not seem like the threat he usually he is. Even had his pockets picked on a few occasions.
Nelson Semedo – 6/10
Played too little to warrant a rating.
