Rangers had a big task of responding in this weekend game after exiting the cup against Aberdeen at home. They took on Kilmarnock at Ibrox, and the Gers only managed to earn a draw in the end as the game ended 1-1.
It took a simple ball from deep to unlock Rangers defence around the half-hour mark as Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson lacked communication and provided Conor McAleny with a considerable gap to exploit. The ease with which the goal was scored would have certainly miffed the home supporters. Rangers had some goalmouth action, but they could have gone 2-0 down at half time as the Killie missed a great chance.
Gerrard’s words did some trick at half time as Rangers looked much more lively and tried to press the issue. However, Kilmarnock were able to keep the ball well on occasions and frustrated Rangers. Morelos rescued a point for his side as he turned brilliantly by showing great strength and finished well in the end.
Allan McGregor 4
A spectator in the game as Kilmarnock were pinned down in their half. Came off his line to save the first goal but it wasn’t to be. Can be blamed for committing too early for the goal.
Nikola Katic 4.5
Was beaten easily on occasions and looked rusty to start with here. Grew in the second half and put in some good challenges.
Connor Goldson 5
Supposed to be the leader at the back but couldn’t communicate well enough on the day. The gap between the two centre-halves was often as big as the grand canyon and the fact that this duo was playing for the first time since November last year showed. Like his partner, got better in the second half.
Andy Halliday 4
His crossing was poor, and as a result, Gerrard decided to substitute him at half time.
James Tavernier 4.5
Like usual, played most of the game in opposition’s half. Like usual, lacked quality in the final third.
Glen Kamara 4.5
Started poorly but won some 50-50 balls in the second half. However, someone like McCrorie should replace him as the former Arsenal midfielder has looked jaded on occasions.
Lassana Coulibaly 6
The Angers loanee got his first start of the year and looked bright and energetic. Definitely felt like he wanted to prove a point. Made some good runs early on but faded as the game went on.
Steven Davis 7
His best display after coming back from Southampton. The veteran was everywhere on the pitch and initiated a lot of attacks. Took one good attempt on goal in the first half.
Ryan Kent 6
Poor final product but did provide some bright moments with his energetic runs. Needs to be more composed while delivering crosses.
Daniel Candeias 4
Was almost invisible on the pitch as he was found wanting on various occasions.
Alfredo Morelos 7
A typical Morelos performance as he was full of energy. Got engaged with the opposition needlessly. Finished brilliantly after a smart turn to earn his side a point.
Substitutes
Borna Barisic 4
Was brought on to deliver better crosses but the same story as Halliday ensued as the Croatian also struggled.
Eros Grezda 4.5
Had some neat touches but wasn’t able to do much.
Jermain Defoe 5
Came close to scoring but missed his mark.
