Reports from the Scottish Sun earlier mentioned that Rangers were one of the interested parties in signing Chelsea defender Tomas Kalas. The 25-year-old is currently on loan with Championship outfit Bristol City where he has managed to ear a lot of plaudits. Apart from the Gers, Celtic and even Bristol City were interested in signing him in the summer. The defender was being valued at £5m.
However, if the latest reports from Bristol Live are to go by then, Chelsea would be unwilling to sell any of their players in the upcoming summer transfer window given the transfer ban they are going to face. Now the ban does allow them to at least sell the players, but one can understand why the club might take such a stance as they wouldn’t be allowed to sign replacements if they go on to sell their players.
Another one of Chelsea defender’s Andreas Christensen who has struggled for game time this season recently said that the current situation at the London club isn’t ideal. He said, ”The messages we’ve got are that Chelsea can’t appeal the case and therefore want to keep all the players. The situation I have ended up in has been very difficult to accept.”
Kalas has been with Chelsea since he was 16 and has only made four appearances for them in all these years. The Czech international has had seven loan spells and barring any major injury crisis, Kalas would continue to find it hard to get game time next season if he stays at Stamford Bridge.
This stance from the Blues has dealt all the chasing clubs including Rangers a significant blow. Kalas seemed to be an attainable target as he was being valued at £5m and he appeared to be the perfect mix of youth plus experience. Rangers might need to look at other options now as Gerrard needs to go after a defender or two in the summer.
Joe Worrall who is currently a regular at the back is just on loan from Nottingham Forest, and his deal would expire in the summer. Gareth McAuley too was signed on a one year deal last summer. Therefore there would be two vacancies at the back.
Moreover, Connor Goldson has looked shaky for quite some time and Gerrard might want to look for an upgrade and Kalas was fitting the bill perfectly until the latest reports regarding Chelsea came up. Gerrard now needs to look at other defenders as Kalas seems to be out of contention.
