Celtic are set to have a huge summer transfer window as quite a few players are in line to depart from the club. Moreover, some of their top talents like Callum McGregor, Kieran Tierney and James Forrest could be poached away by bigger clubs. So there is no doubt in our mind that the upcoming summer window can set precedence on who might dominate the Scottish football for the next few years.
One area where Celtic are going to be poorly hit is the centre back position. Dedryck Boyata is set to leave on a free transfer, and Leicester City loanee Filip Benkovic’s loan spell will also expire. Therefore two top centre-halves are set to depart the club and signing a defender should be a priority for the manager.
Jozo Simunovic and Kristoffer Ajer have shown impressive signs, but Jack Hendry has failed to live up to expectations. Therefore we look at three centre backs which the club can sign in the summer.
Scott McKenna
The Hoops have been interested in this Scottish defender for quite some time and have had bids rejected for him in the summer of 2018. McKenna has continued to put in impressive performances, and he still should be on the agenda of the club.
The young defender has everything to his game as he is robust, reads the situation well and is calm and composed on the ball. Therefore he should suit Celtic’s playing style, and the Bhoys should try their luck in the summer again to sign him.
Jake Cooper
The Millwall defender is a monster in the air as he stands at 6 ft 5 inches. The English defender has managed four goals and seven assists in all competitions this season for the Lions, and that showcases how impressive he is in the air while going forward.
Apart from his aerial abilities, Cooper is a reliable and committed defender who showcases a lot of heart. Last season Rangers tried to sign him, but the defender stayed put at the Den. We believe he can be a decent addition at Parkhead in the summer.
Ciaran Clark
The Newcastle United defender has fallen down the pecking order with the Tyneside outfit after the emergence of Fabian Schar, Florian Lejeune and Federico Fernandez. We don’t see this Irish international breaking into the Magpies lineup, and he could be available in the upcoming transfer market. In terms of ability, the 29-year-old has still got it and his versatility to play in various positions would also come in handy for the Hoops.
