According to the latest reports from Calciomercato, Tottenham Hotspur are the most interested club in signing Sampdoria’s defender Joachim Andersen. Inter Milan are also in the mix to sign this Danish defender, but Spurs seems more keen at the moment.
The report also adds that Sampdoria’s lawyer Romey met the Spurs’ representative in London recently and the English club confirmed that they would be willing to shell out €25m for the 22-year-old centre half.
Spurs have been linked with this Serie A defender in the past week, but this recent development showcases the fact that they are interested in bringing him to the White Hart Lane in the summer. However, Inter are not willing to let their target slip away so easily, and CEO Marotta is preparing an offer. He could take the route of a player plus cash deal to lure Andersen.
Tottenham Hotspur have gone from strength to strength under Pochettino this season as they have quietly gone about their business in the Premier League (their recent defeat against Burnley notwithstanding). The North London club hasn’t spent a single penny in the last two transfer windows, and we can expect some business being done by the club in the summer. Tottenham needs to go after a defender as Toby Alderweireld’s one-year extension in the contract has been triggered, and Jan Vertonghen is already over 30.
Andersen is versatile enough to play in various positions. Predominantly a central defender, he can play further up the pitch in a defensive midfield role as the Danish star is quite comfortable with the ball on his feet. He has been a regular feature for Sampdoria this season in Serie A, and his performances haven’t gone unnoticed.
The defender still has a long term contract with Sampdoria until 2022. Therefore, it is clear that the defender isn’t going to come in for cheap. Andersen has a commanding presence at the back as he stands at 6ft3inches. He reads the situation well and is a classic modern day defender with outstanding abilities on the ball. Therefore it is no surprise that Pochettino is looking at him as an option as he often wants his defenders to play it out from the back.
However, one thing where the defender lacks a bit is his pace, and that could be a bit of a problem in the Premier League as quite a few teams prefer to start mobile and fast strikers over traditional target man. Nevertheless, he still seems like a decent bet for Spurs.
