According to a recent report by Calciomercatonews, Tottenham Hotspur have joined the race to secure the services of Steven Nzonzi from AS Roma next summer. The same source has also revealed that Spurs are set to battle with their bitter rivals, Arsenal in pursuit of the French midfielder and are keeping tabs on his performances this season.
Calciomercatonews have also added that if the Gunners fail to appoint Monchi as their new director of football, then it could pave the way for Spurs to swoop in for the player.
Nzonzi has struggled to find consistency with his performances on the pitch this season. He has fallen way off from his usual high standards and has looked like a shadow of his former self. The Colombes born talent needs a change in scenery if he wants to be more productive in midfield and keep his place in Didier Deschamps’ French national team.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup winner has appeared for a total of 28 matches for Roma this term, finding the back of the net once while also creating two assists across all competitions. His returns on the pitch have been poor, to say the least. At 30, Nzonzi still has a lot to offer in midfield, but it is clear that he has had a dip in form during this season which will be a cause for concern.
The French international wins a lot of headers in midfield due to his incredible leap and ability to time his headers to perfection. Moreover, he has also shown in the past that he can be a driving force from midfield which is precisely what the top clubs except Manchester City are missing at the moment. There is no doubt that Nzonzi would offer something different to Spurs in midfield which might help them bridge the gap to Liverpool and Man City over the next few years.
The potential acquisition of Nzonzi will undoubtedly bolster Mauricio Pochettino’s midfield options at the North London club. Spurs have got the likes of Harry Winks, Victor Wanyama, Moussa Sissoko, Eric Dier, Christian Eriksen and Oliver Skipp vying for a midfield berth in their first-team. Hence, adding Nzonzi will not only increase competition for places within Pochettino’s squad but will also offer something different for them in the middle of the park.
Hence, it makes sense for Tottenham to land him next summer as he could turn out to be a real asset under Pochettino’s expert guidance despite failing to perform consistently at Rome this season.
