Rangers might have been active in the last two transfer windows, but one of the areas where they failed to add a reinforcement was the attacking midfield position. Steven Gerrard had claimed (The Scottish Sun) in November of last year that signing a no. 10 was going to be his priority. However, none of the signings made in January was an outright no. 10.
One of the players from whom the manager and fans would have expected a lot was Steven Davis. But the former Southampton captain has failed to hit the ground running. Recently George Byers of Swansea City launched a come and get me plea as he opened up about being a big-time Rangers fan.
The 22-year-old was quoted as saying (Daily Record), ”Both my parents are from Glasgow area. As a kid, I had a Scottish accent but that changed as I came through school in England. But my parents definitely brought me up as a Scot and most of my family are still up there. If Rangers ever came in for me, I’d jump at it. They wouldn’t even need to ask the question. Not many people get to play for their boyhood club. So it’s one of my dreams – to play for Rangers.”
Byers is an attack-minded midfielder and has come up from Watford’s academy. The midfielder is still trying to establish himself at Liberty Stadium as he has made just seven appearances in the Championship this season. This is the first senior season for the 22-year-old as he previously used to ply his trade for their u-23 side.
Predominantly a central midfielder, Byers has that attacking side to his game which can see him being deployed as a no. 10. However, he is not yet proven at the top level and Swansea should want to keep hold of him for the time being as the midfielder is just starting his journey at the top level with them.
There is no doubt that Rangers can attract him. After Davis’ poor performances, maybe Gerrard could look at a new midfielder to replace him. The former Liverpool captain might be the perfect man to bring the best out of someone like Byers, and that could benefit Rangers.
It’s true that Rangers have got a plethora of midfielders at their disposal but none of them can be classified as an outright playmaker. Byers has the potential to be the difference maker in the final third and after his recent comments, we feel Rangers should keep track of this talented midfielder for a possible move in the future.
