Leeds United missed out on the signing of Daniel James in the January transfer window, but club’s chief executive Angus Kinnear recently confirmed that United would be interested in signing the winger once again in the summer. Now Phil Hay of Yorkshire Evening Post recently gave an update on the winger’s contract situation with Swansea City. It was reported earlier that Swansea are trying to secure a new deal for James, but Hay has a positive update for the Leeds fans.
The journalist was quoted as saying on Inside Elland Road Podcast, ”He is discussing a new contract with Swansea but there doesn’t seem to be much progress in that. And, after a conversation I had with his agent, I’d be a bit surprised if it happened.”
We feel Leeds will have a strong chance of signing James in the summer especially when the player was so close to joining last month. The Whites are also in a strong position to move to the Premier League by next season. On the other hand, the Swans are currently struggling to get in the playoff spots. With the chance to play in the Premier League, we believe there would be no stopping James from joining Elland Road in the summer.
The winger came up as a surprise target last month as stats-wise the 21-year-old wasn’t having a fantastic season at Liberty Stadium. However, Bielsa saw the potential in him as it was reported (Wales Online) that the manager had handpicked James from a list of likely January targets.
The Welsh international recently showcased his talent as he scored a late stunning goal against Brentford in the FA Cup. There is no doubt that the winger has immense potential and Bielsa could be the perfect man to bring the best out of him.
Leeds United have done tremendously well in the past few months with all their injury problems. They went through a bit of lull in performance but they are slowly getting back to their best. All they need is a final charge to secure the promotions spots which would see them come back to the top division after more than a decade of struggle in the lower divisions.
The Swans would definitely try to hold on to James once again but the recent update from Phil Hay puts United in a strong position after the player’s agent indicated that he might not be keen to extend his contract with the Swans.
