Rangers made some smart acquisitions in the transfer market, and they conducted most of their major business early. The signing of Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis hogged the limelight, but the Bears were also able to pull off the signing of Glen Kamara at the last moment.
The signing of Defoe though is a major game changer for Gerrard as the gaffer already had a brilliant striker in the form of Morelos. However, the English forward is too good a player to be left on the bench even at this age and his goal-scoring instincts in and around the box is second to none.
Gerrard was quoted as saying (Daily Record), ”Jermain gives us the option of playing two up front, whether that be 4-4-2, a diamond, 3-5-2… it gives us that luxury. Kyle also does that we can go with a target man and a smaller guy around him.
Formation: 4-4-2
We are not yet sure what would be the best formation to go in with right now, and it could come down to what the players feel more comfortable in on a particular matchday. The manager is likely to try out different stuff in the upcoming matches, and we will have our answer after that. The formation can also depend on the kind of opposition the team plays against on the day. Against a side who would just completely shut down shop and sit back, having two up front won’t be a bad idea.
Defence
There is hardly any doubt about Allan McGregor’s spot in goal for the Gers. Connor Goldson is likely to be the one half of the central defence. The other place is up for grabs, and Nikola Katic has definitely brought himself back in contention. However, Joe Worrall is going to be the pick for us. James Tavernier and Borna Baraisic are absolute no-brainers for the fullback roles.
Midfield
Midfield is where we are going to have a lot of dilemma with new signings like Kamara and Steven Davis coming in. However, it would be unfair to drop either of Ryan Jack and Scott Arfield on the back of their performances in the last few months. Therefore we are going with them in central areas.
Out wide down the left, Ryan Kent is undroppable at the moment, and the Liverpool loanee is finally showing his real quality. Daniel Candeias’ impressive work rate makes him a key player, and he should start from the right.
Attack
We have decided to go with two up top, but Alfredo Morelos can be played in a shadow striker role. He can even drop back deep to help in midfield and play almost as a no. 10. The Colombian showcases an impressive work rate and has the ability to create something out of nothing. We would give him the freedom to drift across the final third. Jermain Defoe is a natural goal scorer and he should be starting in Rangers’ best eleven regularly once he gets completely accustomed to his new teammates.
