According to a recent report by ESPN, Manchester United are hopeful that their first-choice keeper, David De Gea will pen a new, long-term contract. The same source has also revealed that the Red Devils are still locked in negotiations with the player’s representatives. However, there are a few concerns over the agent fees which is driving the price up.
This recent development will be a welcome bit of news for anyone associated with Man United. Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s team cannot afford to lose a player of De Gea’s quality as he has established himself as one of the best, if not the best goalkeeper in European football.
The 28-year-old has already put in some match-winning displays in goal for United during this campaign. He is an exceptional talent who knows how to position himself in defence and play the ball out from the back. Moreover, his lightning-quick reflexes have saved his team time and again which has put Man United in pole position to secure a top 4 spot at the end of this campaign.
There is no doubt about De Gea’s strengths in between the sticks. He has already made some world-class saves to bail his teammates out. The Madrid born talent has featured in 32 matches this term, conceding 39 goals. He also has nine cleansheets across all competitions.
The former Atletico Madrid keeper has also managed to earn 38 international caps for the Spanish national side which shows how valuable he can be for both his club and his country. Moreover, De Gea is still an excellent shot-stopper who can consistently perform at the highest level. Hence, Ed Woodward and co. should do everything in their power to tie the Spaniard up to a new and improved contract.
If Man United can somehow find a way to retain his services for the long-run, then they should waste no time in doing so as world-class goalkeepers like De Gea are pretty hard to come by these days. Hence it will be a massive boost for the Reds of Manchester if they can successfully tie him up on a new and improved contract in the coming weeks.
