According to a recent report by the Daily Mirror, Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana could leave the club at the end of this campaign if the Reds succeed in bringing Sporting CP’s Bruno Fernandes to Anfield. The same source has also revealed that Sporting are prepared to sell the Portuguese midfielder to raise funds which will help them cope with their recent financial struggles.
The Mirror went on to claim that if the Merseyside heavyweights end up signing Fernandes, then Lallana’s career at Liverpool could be over as both players operate in identical positions in midfield.
The former Saints winger has been a sporadic presence in Jurgen Klopp’s first-team so far this season. He has been plagued with injuries throughout his career at Liverpool which has derailed his chances of making the cut at the Merseyside club. His performance as a substitute in last season’s UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid was underwhelming which kind of sums his spell at the north-west of England in a nutshell.
The English midfielder needs a change in scenery if he intends to reignite his career in English football. Hence, a move away from Anfield in the summer could be the best thing for his career. Moreover, Liverpool can also move on and replace him with a more useful talent.
It’s hard to reflect on a career ravaged with injuries, but even at his best, Lallana didn’t show enough on the pitch to merit a regular starting place at the red half of Merseyside. Lallana has made a total of 121 appearances for the Reds since making a switch from Southampton in the summer of 2014. He has scored 21 goals and created 20 assists during that time. What’s more frustrating is the fact that he has missed significant bulk of all the seasons he has been at Liverpool.
It is clear that Lallana was not able to fulfil his true potential for the Reds due to his terrible track record with injuries which is a shame as he was once thought to be one of the brightest young talents in European football. Thus, we are leaning more towards it being an unfortunate loss as with better luck, and in different circumstances, he could have been a player of real promise for Liverpool.
