According to a recent report by the Daily Mirror (February 12, page 56), Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to secure the signature of Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge when he becomes a free agent in the summer. The same source has also revealed that Spurs are looking to boost their attack and have identified the English forward as an ideal back-up to Harry Kane.
Sturridge’s current deal at Anfield expires at the end of this campaign, and the Reds have shown no indication yet about offering him a new contract. Hence, it might be a good move for all parties if he does end up sealing a move to North London next summer. Jurgen Klopp needs to bring in some fresh faces to bolster his attack as Sturridge has often flattered to deceive with some of his recent performances for the Reds.
Moreover, the English goal-scorer has been plagued with injuries during his entire football career. Hence, it will be a risky signing for Spurs, but it will be a risk well-worth taking especially because Mauricio Pochettino will rely on Harry Kane to lead the line every week with Sturridge only filling in the roles of a back-up and an impact substitute from the bench.
Liverpool are currently well in contention to win the Premier League at the end of this campaign, so Klopp deserves a lot of credit for his recent dealings over the past few transfer windows. The German manager will be better of replacing an injury prone, Sturridge with a player who would be able to come in and compete for a first-team place with the likes of Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.
The Reds have had to be patient with Sturridge throughout his time with the Merseyside club, so it’s high time they let him go and moved on to more reliable options up front. The English forward’s departure might be a blessing if Liverpool manages to bring in a better replacement for him next summer.
However, for now, it seems like Klopp should give up on his prized asset and let him move to Tottenham for free ahead of the new campaign as it will be beneficial for everyone involved.
