Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed in his pre-match press conference (Liverpool Echo) that Joe Gomez will likely be fit to return to first-team action after the international break next month. In a recent interview, he shed some light on the English defender’s recovery process and said, “I think after the international break Joe should be okay,”
“If nobody gets injured before then we’ll have a proper choice. Joe is doing his rehab and looks good, big steps, outside running and all these things.”
Gomez has been out of action for the Merseyside club over the past few months after he picked up a serious ankle injury back in December last year. Since then he has undergone surgery on his leg and has gradually stepped up his rehabilitation programme in recent weeks. Liverpool Echo has also disclosed that the 21-year-old will miss the upcoming fixtures against Watford, Everton, Burnley, Bayern Munich and Fulham but could be in line to feature against Tottenham Hotspur on March 31st.
The English defensive ace had enjoyed a successful campaign with the Merseyside giants this season before he picked up his ankle injury. He had put in many commanding displays at the back and has been one of the primary reasons behind Liverpool’s stellar defensive record so far in this campaign.
Gomez has featured in 13 league matches for the Reds this term, making 1.3 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game in the English top-flight (Stats taken from Whoscored.com). The former Charlton academy graduate has managed to earn six international caps for the English national team and has also represented the Three Lions at various youth levels during his young career so far.
Jurgen Klopp’s positive injury update on Gomez will be a massive boost for everyone associated with Liverpool. The Reds manager desperately needs every one of his players to be fit so that they can help in ending the club’s 29-year wait for the Premier League title.
Having the English centre-half back could be integral to Liverpool’s title hopes this term as he will add a lot of quality to the Reds backline. Gomez has come leaps and bounds under the leadership of Klopp and the mentorship of Virgil Van Dijk at Anfield this season. There is no doubt that it will be a big boost for the Merseyside giants if they can somehow have their English prospect back in time to face off against Spurs next month.
