The wounds of Brendan Rodgers departing for Leicester City is still raw among Celtic fans, and amidst all this, a report is emerging from the Scottish Sun which should infuriate the Hoops further. The report claims that Brendan Rodgers will target Celtic’s left back Kieran Tierney in the summer if Leicester City loses the services of Ben Chilwell. Manchester City supposedly wants Chilwell and to replace him, Rodgers can look to make a £25m raid for Tierney.
Something like this happening was always on the cards. Given the riches of the Premier League and the financial power of Leicester, one shouldn’t be surprised if more Celtic players start getting linked to the King Power Stadium as the summer transfer window approaches.
Kieran Tierney is undoubtedly one of the brightest talents to come out of Parkhead in recent years, and he has already achieved a lot in his young career. At just 21, Tierney has played a massive role in Celtic’s last four title triumphs. Also, he often looks like the best player on the pitch when on a song.
The Scottish international has blistering pace but what makes him stand out is his commitment and desire. The fullback isn’t afraid to go into 50-50 challenges, and he is as good defensively as he is while attacking. Tierney might look on the lighter side, but he has surprisingly good upper body strength which allows him to protect the ball well. Therefore, to sum it up, he can be regarded as a complete modern day full-back with all the attributes.
There is no doubt that Tierney will continue to garner interest from the south. However, a move to Leicester might not go well with the fans. Given the fact Tierney is a boyhood Celtic fan; maybe he might understand that joining Leicester might tarnish his legacy at Parkhead.
Heavyweight clubs from the English top flight have also shown an interest in him, and we believe Tierney has it in him to be successful at the top level. Therefore he might not yet jump ships like Rodgers to join Leicester. However, Celtic will have a tough time in the summer with clubs like Arsenal also interested (Daily Star). It can all come down to whether Tierney would want a new challenge in his career.
His current contract keeps him at Parkhead up until 2023, but if the player really wants to be known as a global phenomenon, then he might be better off leaving Celtic Park. It remains to be seen whether that would happen in the upcoming summer or sometime later on. Our best bet is that Tierney would leave sooner rather than later.
