Leeds United were linked with a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers’ winger Ivan Cavaleiro. However, latest reports from The Telegraph as cited by Birmingham Mail indicates that Wolves are not interested in selling the winger and have knocked down the approach made by the Whites.
The report adds that the Championship table-toppers are keen on him and are weighing up a bid. However, Nuno Espirito Santo still feels that the winger has got a crucial part to play in the second half of the season. The manager has often used the Portuguese winger as an impact substitute after he missed the early part of the season due to an injury.
There is no doubt that Cavaleiro would be a massive signing for the Whites, but it seems like Wolves have turned down an approach even before an official bid could be made. Maybe Marcelo Bielsa can try his luck again with a better offer as we feel that the Portuguese winger is definitely worth around £7m given today’s market condition.
United had earlier signed Barry Douglas from Wolves in the summer and that signing has turned out to be one of the best deal that the club has made in recent times. Cavaleiro played a massive role in Wolves’ promotion run last season where they dominated the Championship. The 25-year-old played in 42 games and produced nine goals and 12 assists. His pace down the right instilled fear in the opposition’s defence, and his acceleration on the ball caused a lot of problems, especially on the counter-attack.
Even with all the injuries, Marcelo Bielsa hasn’t jumped into the transfer market and made any panic buys. He has always been adamant that the players coming in should be better players than what he already has and there is no doubt that Cavaleiro would be an upgrade over someone like Jack Harrison.
The Manchester City loanee has been getting some regular game time of late but he has been far from impressive in his performances. The shifting of Pablo Hernandez to the central areas has opened up the right wing spot, and someone like Cavaleiro could be a perfect fit for this United team.
With the arrival of the likes of Adama Traore and Raul Jimenez over the summer, Cavaleiro is going to see limited game time even though he has fully recovered from his injury. At Elland Road, he can be an integral member of the squad and maybe that might tempt the player to move to West Yorkshire. However, Wolves understands his importance, but United should further test their resolve by officially putting in a bid in the region of £10m for the winger.
