Rangers have stacked up their midfield options by bringing in the likes of Steven Davis and Glen Kamara, and there is every chance that the latter could make a January move after the recent comments (Sky Sports) by the Dundee boss. However, there is one midfielder who has been impressing away from Scotland and that is Greg Docherty.
The midfielder is currently at Shrewsbury Town on loan for the rest of the season, and he has made significant strides in reviving his career. However, according to The Sun, as cited by Daily Record, the midfielder is going to be targetted by Championship outfit Rotherham United this month for a loan spell. United got promoted to the second tier just this season and are currently languishing in the 21st spot.
Docherty’s path to Rangers’ first team looks tough even though he is having an impressive spell in League One. The midfielder has managed five goals and five assists in this ongoing campaign and no other player in the Shrews’ squad has made more direct goal contributions.
However, a chance to move to the Championship should be entertained by the midfielder and Rangers as that would allow the player to test himself against tougher opponents.
The midfield has indicated that he would like to return back to Rangers but understands that he is better suited in continuing his loan spell. He said (Daily Record), ”Rangers seem to be quite happy with my progress and the last thing they want is for me not to be playing, so if I keep developing down here they will be happy. With everything going on at the club – the win over Celtic, players like Davis and Jermain Defoe coming in – of course, I was thinking it’d be great to be back involved in that this month but I’ve got to think about what’s best for me in the long term.”
There were even talks of Rangers calling him back from his loan spell this month, but the signing of Davis should put those rumours to bed and Gerrard in no way should think about recalling him back. The Gers have plenty of depth and cover in midfield and getting Docherty back would hamper with his development as he would struggle to get regular game time.
The likes of Ryan Jack and Ross McCrorie have proved themselves since Gerrard took over and Docherty is going to find it hard to break into the Gers lineup when he joins the side after this summer. However, if he continues to impress in the Championship, Gerrard would have another top prospect at his disposal.
Therefore we feel if the opportunity is there then the club and the player should take it and Rangers should sanction a move for him to send him to play in the English second division for Rotherham United.
