The Guardian has recently reported that West Ham United are prepared to match the £43.5m release clause in Celta de Vigo striker Maxi Gomez’s contract in order to bring him to the London Stadium during this January transfer period. However, the same report has also revealed that the Hammers are willing to loan him back to Celta Vigo for the remainder of this campaign so that the forward can help them survive relegation from the La Liga this season.
This recent development will come as welcome news for the Hammers supporters as they will be getting a prolific striker if they can lure the Uruguayan international to make a switch to East London next summer.
Gomez has formed one of the most prolific attacking partnerships in the top tier of Spanish football while playing alongside former Liverpool forward Iago Aspas. The Celta duo has found the back of the net on a consistent basis, and their incredible goal-scoring contributions have helped the La Liga outfit stay away from the relegation zone for the time being.
However, the 19 goals scored between the duo has still not been enough for Celta Vigo to get to safety as they currently find themselves in the 17th place with just a point separating them from the drop zone.
Gomez does not possess blistering pace, but he is still quite an effective dribbler with the ball at his feet as he can shield the ball using his incredible strength and power. The Uruguayan goal-getter is a fox inside the opposition box and is quite lethal in front of the opposition goal. The 22-year-old has a habit of finding space and takes up good positions inside the opposition box.
He has scored nine goals and provided five assists in 20 appearances for Celta Vigo this term which explains why the Spanish club would be desperate to hang on to his services for the remainder of this season.
The acquisition of a forward of Gomez’s prolific nature could turn the Hammers from mid-table mediocrity to UEFA Europa League regulars so Manuel Pellegrini should do everything in his power to get this deal over the line even if it means that West Ham have to break their transfer record in order to do so.
