West Ham United are looking to turn their season around in the Premier League after their disastrous start to the season. The Hammers have won five of their last eight matches and are looking to continue their good form in the second half of the season as well.
The east London club, however, are looking to get rid of their injury worries, which has been a significant obstacle for their progress this season. They might look to add a few new faces to their side and have already included the former Manchester City ace Samir Nasri.
A number of key players in the form of Jack Wilshere, Manuel Lanzini, Andriy Yarmolenko and Carlos Sanchez are missing from the West Ham midfield due to injuries, leaving Manuel Pellegrini with no choice but to add more players to his side to increase squad depth. One such player is Everton’s James McCarthy, as the Chilean is tracking him according to Mail Online.
Given the current condition of his side, it would be a wise move for Pellegrini to bring a player like McCarthy into the squad. The Irishman has fallen down the pecking order under Marco Silva’s tutelage and a loan move out of the club would also help him get some valuable minutes out on the pitch.
Pellegrini has used Declan Rice in the midfield throughout the season, and the player has responded very well to his manager’s call. However, it is high time for the Chilean to find a suitable partner for him given veteran midfielder Mark Noble’s poor performance beside him (although yesterday night’s performance from Noble against Brighton was an exception to the rule). McCarthy could be the right foil in the West Ham midfield for his compatriot.
Though Grady Diangana and Samir Nasri are in line to take up a spot beside the high flying 19-year-old in the midfield, both of them are attacking minded players whereas McCarthy is an out-and-out central midfielder. Besides, the ageing Mark Noble has been found wanting towards the end of matches on almost every occasion, which calls for McCarthy to be included in the starting lineup if the Hammers can strike a deal with Everton.
West Ham United have toiled hard this season and have turned it around in their favour. However, throwing away the advantage due to players’ injuries would be suicidal for them, and so it is imperative for them to add more depth to their squad. On the other hand, McCarthy, who has almost no hope of getting back into the starting lineup under Marco Silva, would be happy to experience regular outings. So it is a win-win situation for both the player and the club.
