West Ham United did not start the season in the best possible way but have made an excellent comeback in the last couple of months to place themselves in a comfortable position in the league table. The Hammers are currently in the 10th position and would be looking to improve as the season progresses.
The east London club’s biggest problem this season has been the unavailability of key players due to injury worries. Players like Andriy Yarmolenko, Jack Wilshere, Manuel Lanzini and Carlos Sanchez are long term absentees at the London Stadium while strikers Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez and Lucas Perez have been made sporadic appearances in the first team owing to their injuries. This has led to the veteran Chilean looking for reinforcements as he struggles to increase the squad depth.
According to the Daily Mail (transfer live blog, 10:14 AM), the Hammers are eyeing Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson to add steel to their attack. West Ham has been strongly dependent on their talismanic striker Marko Arnautovic so far this season. Wilson is in prolific form this season and has notched up nine goals along with two assists for the Cherries.
With Arnautovic doing the bulk of the scoring for the Hammers this season, there is a real need for Pellegrini to get a player into the side who can share the Austrian’s load. Wilson has been in fine form this season for the Cherries and could be a very good option to beef up their attack.
Chicharito, Perez and Andy Carroll are all past their prime, which is evident from their performances so far this season. This has already forced Pellegrini to bring young Portuguese winger Xande Silva into the side to play alongside Arnautovic. The addition of Callum Wilson would definitely be a big relief for the former Premier League winning manager.
Pellegrini has done well to help his side play with a lot of grit and bring in an air of conviction in the team after a disastrous start to the season. It would be absolutely suicidal for them now to throw away that advantage. So the addition of Wilson would not only help to increase their squad depth but also would establish the Hammers as one of the most lethal strike forces in the Premier League.
Though it would be a complicated task to land the player with the Cherries not willing to let their in-form striker move to a rival club, the Hammers should try their best to get Callum Wilson into their side to strengthen it for the long term.
