According to a recent report by Sky Sports, West Ham United are inching closer towards securing a deal for Maxi Gomez from Celta de Vigo. However, the player will make his way to London in the summer only as the player will remain at the La Liga side for the rest of the season.
According to the same report from Sky Sports, this will mean that West Ham does not need to pay the £43.3m release clause. Apparently, the Hammers will get the player for a price closer to the £40m mark.
There is no doubt that this recent development will excite the Hammers supporters as they will be getting a prolific striker who has proven his worth at the highest level. Gomez has established himself amongst the top goal-getters in the La Liga this season while striking a fantastic partnership with former Sevilla forward Iago Aspas at Celta Vigo.
The Spanish duo has worked well together and has found the back of the net on a consistent basis throughout the course of this campaign. Their significant goal-scoring contributions have also helped the La Liga outfit steer clear off the relegation zone for the time being.
Gomez might not be too mobile on the ground, but he makes up for his lack of pace through his intuition and football intelligence in front of the opposition goal. He is also a productive dribbler with the ball at his feet as he can protect the ball using his massive strength and power to get the better of his marker up top.
The Uruguayan prospect is quite deadly inside the opposition penalty box and also has a knack for finding space as he possesses a poacher’s instincts. The Paysandu born sensation has registered 9 goals and created 5 assists in 20 matches for Celta Vigo this term which goes on to show why the La Liga outfit are so desperate to hang on to his services for the remainder of this season.
The acquisition of a striker like Gomez could turn out to be a massive coup for the Hammers as they look to challenge for the Europa League spot next season. Hence, it makes sense for the West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini to go all out to recruit him this month even if it means paying close to £40m.
