Tottenham’s trophy dreams were shattered last week following their exit from both the domestic Cup contests within a couple of days. They are lagging behind in the Premier League title race whereas injuries have cast doubt over their European run. Spurs, surprisingly, refrained from recruiting any new name back in the summer and are yet to splash the cash this window in spite of suffering successive fitness setbacks in the past couple of weeks.
But the reports are suggesting a busy couple of days for the North London side as they have been linked with a move for the 22-year-old Valencia midfield sensation Carlos Soler, according to ESPN.
The Spain youth international is lauded as their NxGn superstar and often compared to David Silva for his ability to dictate the game from the middle of the park. Although utilised down the right of a ‘midfield four’, Soler is also effective enough as a midfield attacker who likes to release through balls, play one-twos to create space and also have a go from long range. His tackling is a bit clumsy at times, but the player is capable of holding on to the ball and distributing for his teammates with great vision and coordination attributes.
Spurs, meanwhile, are preparing a £30m bid for Soler and are the frontrunners to line him up despite previous interest from Paris St-Germain, Manchester City and Barcelona. Manchester United have also monitored his progress minutely in recent months but might lose the race now.
Mauricio Pochettino is hailed for nurturing talents and the prospect of joining the North Londoners would see Soler earning enough game-time to prove his worth. He has been a regular at Valencia since the last couple of years and is closing in on 100 senior appearances for his boyhood side.
Spurs are heavily reliant on Harry Winks, Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama in central midfield after having parted ways with veteran Mousa Dembele (who has joined Chinese Super League outfit Guangzhou RF) earlier this month. Moussa Sissoko is struggling to stay fit whereas Dele Alli is now out for a while after undergoing a hamstring injury versus Manchester United.
The club desperately requires a versatile midfield star who would operate centrally as well as down the wide areas depending upon the necessity of the team. The player also brings in high work ethics and often drops down deep to win back possession before converting it into an attacking movement. Signing Soler, therefore, would be a strong statement of intent from Tottenham Hotspur who need to step up the chase and complete the swoop before Thursday’s transfer deadline.
