According to a recent report by Bild, Tottenham Hotspur have launched a bid to secure the signature of Bayer 04 Leverkusen midfielder Jonas Hofmann. The same report has also revealed that Spurs are prepared to make the German talent one of their highest-paid players in order to lure him to North London before the end of this January transfer period.
The former Hoffenheim youth prospect has enjoyed a successful campaign for the German outfit after putting in some commanding displays in midfield during this season. The 26-year-old has made 16 appearances for Peter Bosz’s team this term, finding the back of the net six times while providing seven assists across multiple competitions.
Hofmann is very quick and agile which helps him to be a productive dribbler with the ball down the wide areas. He has gradually improved his game over the past few campaigns and has a knack for scoring and setting up goals on a consistent basis. He will be a perfect fit for Spurs especially after the recent departure of Mousa Dembele to Guangzhou R&F earlier this month.
The Bundesliga talent has also represented Germany at various youth levels but is yet to make his international debut for Joachim Löw’s senior side so far. The Heidelberg born midfielder worked his way up the youth ranks of Hoffenheim before sealing a move to Borussia Dortmund II as a free agent in the summer of 2011. Since then, he had a loan spell with Mainz before his switch to Leverkusen back in 2016.
Signing a player like Hofmann will undoubtedly bolster Pochettino’s midfield options at the North London club. The German will add some more creativity to Mauricio Pochettino’s midfield and will also be a decent goal-threat in the opposition half.
However, Tottenham already have a lot of talented midfielders in their ranks such as Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Harry Winks, Christian Eriksen, Oliver Skipp and Moussa Sissoko who are all battling for a midfield berth in Pochettino’s first-team. Hence, securing the services of another midfield option might backfire as it could hamper the overall chemistry of the Spurs squad.
Having said that, recent injuries have not helped Pochettino’s cause so bringing in another talented midfielder could help Spurs cope with injuries better as they look to secure a top 4 spot and do well in the UEFA Champions League over the next few months. All in all, we think Spurs would be justified going all the way to seal this deal.
