According to a recent report by Calciomercato, Tottenham Hotspur are one of the teams chasing after Inter Milan midfielder Radja Nainggolan. The same report has also revealed that Spurs are set to fight it out with Chelsea and Manchester United in pursuit of the Serie A talent.
Mauricio Pochettino is still on the lookout for a new midfielder following Mousa Dembele’s £11m departure to join Chinese Super League outfit, Guangzhou R&F earlier this month. Nainggolan could be a smart acquisition for the North London outfit, and he would be a perfect replacement for Dembele in Pochettino’s squad.
The Belgian prospect has found it difficult adjusting to life in the San Siro since making a switch from AS Roma last summer. However, the 30-year-old has just managed to score three goals in 17 appearances for Inter so far in this campaign which is not good enough for a player of his high standards. The former Piacenza prospect has also secured 30 international caps for the Belgium national team and has six international goals to his name so far.
Inter Milan boss Luciano Spalleti has also given him the freedom to operate in a free-flowing number 10 role at times, but he has still not managed to be productive in the final third. Hence, a move away from the Serie A club could help him get his career back on track.
The Belgian talent has been on the decline this season which will be a cause of significant concern for Tottenham. However, the fact remains that he is still one of the most talented midfielders in European football so Spurs would be foolish not to pursue him.
The potential acquisition of Nainggolan will undoubtedly bolster Pochettino’s attacking options at North London. Spurs have some talented midfielders in their ranks such as Christian Eriksen, Harry Winks, Eric Dier, Oliver Skipp, Victor Wanyama, Moussa Sissoko and Dele Alli vying for a midfield berth in Pochettino’s starting XI. However, Nainggolan’s arrival could add even more quality and increase more competition amongst the Tottenham midfielders.
Despite some concerns over his form this season, the Belgian midfield sensation is a quality talent who can turn Spurs from title pretenders to title winners if he can perform at a high level under Pochettino’s tutelage. This signing seems like a no brainer if Tottenham can manage to work out the kinks of the deal.
