According to a recent report by Calciomercato, Tottenham Hotspur are being linked with a €40m move for Sampdoria defender Joachim Andersen next summer. The same report goes on to add that Inter Milan are set to rival Spurs in pursuit of the Serie A talent.
A renowned journalist, Ciro Venerato shed some light on the Danish defender’s future in an interview with Rai Sport (via PassioneInter). He said, “Joachim Andersen? Yes there are some teams who have expressed interest in him as he has been doing well in the Serie A. Tottenham are one of these teams as they have a 40 million euros offer ready for him. I think the Spurs would like to get him during the summer transfer window. Sampdoria? They have their eyes on Trapani’s Erasmo Mulé to replace him so let’s see. Inter? I think the Nerazzurri will have to watch out for Tottenham on the Andersen front clearly…”.
If the report is to be believed, then it will be received as a major surprise by a lot of people as the Sampdoria talent is a relatively unknown prospect outside of Italy and Denmark. However, to his credit, he has put in some solid displays at the back for Marco Giampaolo’s side during the course of this season.
His incredible contributions on the pitch helped the Italian outfit climb to the 7th place of the Serie A table. Sampdoria are now well in contention to secure European football for next season which would be an incredible feat if they can pull it off.
Andersen is quite versatile as he primarily operates as a centre-half but can also play as a makeshift defensive midfielder at the centre of the park. The Danish defensive ace is physically strong and is a good defender in his own half. He keeps his composure well during high-pressure situations and is quite reliable at the back. However, the Sampdoria talent lacks the pace and the ball-playing ability to feature for a club like Spurs.
Mauricio Pochettino’s system at North London is wholly based on players playing out from the back. Hence, Andersen might not be the best fit for Spurs at the moment. However, he is quite a promising prospect who could be nurtured into a world-class talent if a manager like Pochettino set his mind into it.
The North London giants should undoubtedly consider signing the Danish talent but only if they are willing to spend money on other players. Otherwise, they should use the €40m to strengthen other, more pressing, areas of their squad.
