It was another night of disappointment for Everton as they went down by 2-1 against Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium in their 23rd match of the season. It was a pretty ordinary game of football by both the sides as neither team were able to bring out their best until the 50th minute when James Ward-Prowse’s long-range strike found the back of the visitors’ net. Nathan Redmond’s shot was deflected off Lucas Digne to give the Saints a second goal and a much-needed win in the Premier League.
Gylfi Sigurdsson pulled one back in the 91st minute for the Toffees, but it was too little too late for them.
Here is how the Everton players were rated from their defeat against Southampton.
Jordan Pickford: 5
His position was wrong in case of both the goals. Made a few good saves later in the match but could have done better to stop the second goal at least.
Lucas Digne: 7
Kept lunging forward whenever he got the ball. Tracked back well also.
Kurt Zouma: 5
Another disappointing performance as he let the Southampton players take shots on the goal freely on a number of occasions.
Michael Keane: 5
Equally disappointing as Zouma, the Englishman was seen nowhere near the ball to put in a challenge in case of both the goals.
Seamus Coleman: 6
Kept his composure well while on the attack but could not do the same while defending.
Andre Gomes: 5
Looked pretty ordinary throughout the match. Could not put in a significant shift to keep the opposition attackers under check. Was substituted in the second half.
Idrissa Gueye: 7
Kept vying with the Southampton players for the ball in the middle of the pitch and intercepted quite a few times to break the Southampton attacks before building.
Ademola Lookman: 6
Looked sharp on occasions. Lacked the accuracy though.
Bernard: 6
Passed the ball well in the first half but lacked the composure in the second one.
Gylfi Sigurdsson: 7
Kept pressing for the goal from the word go and finally got his reward in the dying minutes of the match.
Richarlison: 5
Was utterly disappointing as Jan Bednarek proved to be too good on the day.
Substitutes
Dominic Calvert-Lewin: 4
Brought nothing special into the match after he came on in the second half.
Cenk Tosun: 4
Lacked composure in his short stay on the pitch as his goal drought continued.
Theo Walcott: NA
Played too little to warrant a rating.
