According to a recent report by TransferMarketWeb, Liverpool have entered the race to secure the services of Nicolò Barella from Cagliari. However, the same report has also claimed that the likes of AC Milan, Napoli, Roma and Inter Milan will battle it out with the Reds in pursuit of the Serie A sensation.
Barella is rated quite highly in Europe and can be considered as one of the brightest young midfielders in the top tier of Italian football. The Italian starlet has caught the eye after putting in a string of sensational displays in midfield for Cagliari over the past couple of years.
At the mere age of 21, he has managed to establish himself as a first-team regular under Rolando Maran’s tutelage this season. The Cagliari born prospect has made 20 appearances for the Italian outfit this term, scoring one goal across all competitions.
The 21-year-old played an important role in helping his boyhood club retain their top-flight status last season which goes on to show that he is taking small steps towards fulfiling his potential with each game. Barella has represented his country, Italy at every youth level from Under-15s to Under-21s. He has also managed to secure two international caps for the Italian national side so far in his young career.
The 21-year-old is pretty quick both on and off the ball and makes dangerous runs into the opposition penalty box. He is also blessed with incredible vision and also has a varied passing range. However, the Serie A wonderkid needs to work on his upper body strength if he wants to stand the test of Premier League football, which is famous for it’s physicality and high intensity.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp would do well to fend off stiff competition and lure the Italian prospect to Anfield as Barella has the potential to become one of the best players in his position if nurtured by a brilliant man-manager like Klopp over the next few years.
He will add more competition for places in midfield which would give the likes of James Milner and Jordan Henderson some rest from time to time. As the senior players at Anfield get old, the Reds would need other players to step up and lead the team towards a bigger and better future at Merseyside. Barella fits the bill perfectly at Liverpool.
