According to the Daily Star, as cited by Calciomercato, Rangers are interested in signing former West Ham United midfielder Ravel Morrison. More fuel has been added to these rumours ever since the 25-year-old started following (Daily Record) certain Rangers players and the official Rangers account on Instagram.
The Englishman currently plies his trade for Italian outfit Lazio and it is being reported that the Serie A outfit wants the player off their wage bill so that they can free up some space for new players. The midfielder had spent the last season on loan with Mexican outfit Atlas and he is yet to make an appearance for Lazio this season.
Steven Gerrard had earlier indicated that signing a no. 10 would be his priority in January. He was quoted as saying, ”We have those (creative) players here but what we haven’t got is a natural No10, someone who is described as No10 and that’s his job. So maybe in the future that might be an area we might look at.”
Morrison is an attacking midfielder, and therefore it seems like he could be the answer to the no. 10 conundrum. The Gers depend heavily on their wide players to provide an attacking outlet, and they have often struggled to open up teams when they sit back and defend in numbers. Someone like Morrison can be a game changer as he has the talent and spark to create some magic in the final third.
Sir Alex Ferguson had even claimed that Morrison was the most naturally gifted youngster when he was at Old Trafford. However, his career didn’t reach the heights that was expected. He had a spell with West Ham as well and was involved in various loan moves to the Championship before Lazio snapped him up in 2015.
It’s clear that Rangers are interested in him as the player wouldn’t start following the likes of Steven Gerrard or Ryan Kent out of the blue. Maybe this is the final piece of the jigsaw which Gerrard needs to pull off to get one over Celtic. However, the move is going to be slightly risky as given all his talent, Morrison hasn’t lived up to the expectations yet.
Nevertheless, he could be a smart punt for Gerrard and Co and a loan move would be perfect to test him out first. If Morrison gets his bearing, he can dominate the Premiership with all the talent and abilities he possesses and at just 25, the midfielder should have enough in his locker to prove his naysayers wrong. Morrison has the potential to be a season-changing signing for the Gers and they should definitely look to pull this off.
