According to a recent report by Tuttosport, Manchester United are ready to give up Paul Pogba in pursuit of Juventus winger Douglas Costa. The same report has also claimed that the Red Devils are long-term admirers of the Brazilian speedster’s talents, but the Italian giants are eager to retain his services for the time being.
However, Tuttosport has revealed that United are willing to send Pogba back to the Juventus Stadium in order to persuade the Turin side to part ways with Costa.
Costa has often been frustrated with the lack of first-team opportunities under Massimiliano Allegri this season. The Brazilian talent has not been able to fire in all cylinders in the Serie A so far. He has been far too inconsistent with his performances on the pitch which is why Allegri has often excluded him from his starting XI so often. Hence, it makes a lot of sense for them to sell him this month if they can get Paul Pogba in return.
Moreover, Costa needs to make a switch away from the Allianz Arena if he wants to reignite his career at the top level of European football. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will undoubtedly benefit from acquiring a player of Costa’s quality as he could give them an edge in the race for the top 4 spots during the second half of this campaign.
The Reds of Manchester have had to endure a difficult few months in the English top-flight under Jose Mourinho but are currently occupying the 6th place of the league table with an outside shot of claiming a UEFA Champions League spot for next season. Solskjaer needs to bring in some fresh faces this month in order to reenergize his squad for a battle on all fronts in the coming months.
Costa has blistering pace and has a lot of tricks in his locker when he is dribbling with the ball into the opposition penalty box. He also can turn a game around its head if he is playing with confidence on the pitch. So there is no doubt that he could be a smart acquisition for Man United if Ed Woodward can somehow orchestrate a move to bring him to Old Trafford in January.
However, selling Pogba to Juve will deplete Solskjær’s squad significantly, and so they should not consider parting ways with the Frenchman even if it means acquiring Costa in what could be a mega-swap deal between the two goliaths of European football.
