Latest reports confirm that Trent Alexander Arnold has committed his long term future with Liverpool and has signed a contract which would see him stay at Anfield until 2024. It was almost a no brainer for the academy product as the English right-back has seen a meteoric rise in the last one and a half year.
The 20-year-old was also part of the England squad at the 2018 World Cup, and Liverpool would be delighted to have all their major defenders commit to long term deals. Alexander Arnold was delighted to sign the new deal and was quoted as saying (BBC), ”When it comes to playing football, there is only one club for me. I’m ecstatic and really proud. I feel privileged to have the support and the trust the club has in me to offer me a new deal.”
“There was no doubt in my mind to sign and extend the years I have with the club. Hopefully, we can achieve a lot of success in those years. The last 18 months especially have been very special. Hopefully the next 18 months and even further on than that will be even more special.”
Many of the Liverpool fans see him as a future captain material as the defender was born and bred in Liverpool and there was no way he would have left the club when they are on an upward trajectory. The 20-year-old is currently down with a knee injury but is expected to be back soon.
The right-back has still a lot to improve as he needs to work on the defensive side of his game as he is often found out of position in trying to attack. However, one cannot doubt his overall quality especially with the ball at his feet. The youngster can whip in some dangerous crosses with either foot and is also on set-piece duties for his side.
Liverpool have definitely taken a step in the right direction by signing him on a new long term deal. The fact that he is still 20 means the right-back can definitely improve and take his game to the next level. Given his on the ball qualities, we wouldn’t be wrong in saying that he can turn out as a midfielder in the future as his cross-field diagonals and crosses are often very dangerous.
Liverpool now have a steady backline which can dominate the Premier League for years to come and under Jurgen Klopp, young players have thrived. Trent Alexander Arnold might need to bring more consistency to his game, but he has definitely played his part this season in Liverpool’s title charge.
