According to the latest reports from the Scottish Sun, Liverpool are interested in signing Celtic’s influential winger James Forrest. Reports add that Jurgen Klopp has been keeping track of the Scottish international for months and his impressive performance this season has attracted the German’s attention towards the winger.
The reports indicate that Celtic are set to demand at least £8m for their star winger which seems like a meagre amount given the talent Forrest possesses. The winger has his contract until 2022 at Park Head as he signed a new deal not too long ago.
Liverpool might hope that their league standing and ability to fight for big titles at the moment would be enough to lure the winger to Anfield. Forrest has come up from Celtic’s academy, and it is going to be tough for him to make a decision. However, he would be tempted to join the Merseyside club.
Given the form he has shown, Forrest does seem like he would be able to handle himself in the Premier League. With 11 goals and 17 assists so far this season, the winger is definitely in the prime of his career, and this could turn out to be a shrewd signing for Liverpool in the future.
Forrest always looks to drive the ball forward and when on a song, not many can cope with his intensity and pace. It is clear that he wouldn’t be able to replicate the same numbers in the Premier League, but he can be a decent backup option as a winger.
He might have to compete for places with the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, but he can definitely get his chances given that Liverpool are challenging for trophies on all the fronts. The Premier League table-toppers have a more natural backup to Salah in the form of Xherdan Shaqiri but there is no outright backup for Mane at the moment.
The 27-year-old’s work rate is also impressive, and that is another one of the things which might be attracting Klopp’s attention towards him. The Reds’ wingers often track back to help their defence and Forrest shows the same desire and work rate while playing for the Hoops. To go with that, Forrest is someone who produces the final product in the attacking third and he isn’t too shoddy in front of goal himself.
Therefore we think he could be a decent bet for Klopp and like Shaqiri, he can turn out to be a shrewd signing if the Merseyside outfit decides to sign him. It is likely that Celtic would not sell him midway through the season but the Reds can have a definite chance to land him in the summer of 2019.
