According to a recent report by De Telegraaf, as mentioned by the Mirror, Liverpool are monitoring the progress of PSV Eindhoven winger Steven Bergwijn. However, the Reds will face stiff competition from Manchester United in pursuit of the Eredivisie prospect. The same report has also revealed that the £25m-rated PSV forward is on the radar of a number of top clubs in Europe. So Jurgen Klopp would need to move in quickly for the Dutch talent or else risk getting his team involved in a bidding war next summer.
Bergwijn worked his way up the Ajax youth ranks before joining their rivals, PSV Eindhoven back in 2011. Since his switch to the Philips Stadium, the Dutch prospect has slowly risen to prominence after establishing himself as a regular member of the Eredivisie club’s first-team in the summer of 2015.
The 21-year-old has been a real revelation for PSV after he put in some dazzling displays under Mark van Bommel’s tutelage during this campaign. He has featured in 25 matches for the Dutch outfit this term, registering ten goals while providing nine assists in all competitions.
At the tender age of 21, Bergwijn has managed to represent his country, Holland at every youth level from Under-17 onwards. He has also secured three international caps for the Dutch national side so far in his young career.
The Dutch starlet boasts blistering pace and is an outstanding dribbler with the ball at his feet when he runs down the channels behind the opposition defence. He has developed a knack for scoring and setting goals on a consistent basis as evidenced by his eye-catching record this season.
The addition of someone of Bergwijn’s potential could be a shrewd move for Klopp’s team. Moreover, he will also add long-term value to the organisation which fits the Liverpool owners, Fenway Sports Group’s policy of signing young players and developing them into major assets.
However, one could argue whether Liverpool are in need of another winger with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Xherdan Shaqiri, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana already in their ranks fighting for the right to line up in Jurgen Klopp’s first-team. So the Reds might be better off spending the money to strengthen other areas of their squad.
Having said that, if the opportunity for a potential £25m move for Bergwijn presents itself in the near future, then the Merseyside giants would be foolish not to make a move for him especially at such a reasonable price.
