A few days back, reports from the Daily Mail came out that Leeds United were interested in a move for Hull City’s winger Jarrod Bowen and it was believed that the Whites would have to shell out £6.5m for his signature. However, if latest reports from the Mirror is to be believed, then Premier League clubs like Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and Brighton, have been scouting him and this is not a good piece of news for Marcelo Bielsa.
The same report from the Mirror adds that the winger is valued at £10m and with Premier League clubs in the mix, we think United’s chances of landing him have taken a huge dent. City manager Nigel Adkins also indicated that they are not looking to sell Bowen but didn’t count out anything at the moment.
He was quoted as saying, ”Jarrod Bowen has scored two great goals. We’re not looking to sell. The owners have said we don’t need to. However, we all know what football can be like. Jarrod has scored 14 last season, he’s got 10 this season. He’s a young English player who’s exciting and has got flair. Who knows what will happen?”
It was Bowen’s two goals which inflicted a defeat on Leeds United recently as their run of seven consecutive wins was broken. With Premier League clubs entering the race, Adkins would know that Bowen can fetch good money and the Englishman has his contract at the club until 2020. Therefore, the manager is under no pressure to sell him in January and only a huge offer can probably change his mind.
The kind of form which the 22-year-old has shown means he can definitely fetch around or over £10m in today’s market. That would mean that Leeds United would effectively be priced out of a move for the winger.
Bowen would have been a perfect addition to the Whites’ squad as they lack depth in the wingers’ department. After the departure of Samuel Saiz, Bielsa has utilised Spanish winger Pablo Hernandez in more central areas and therefore only Ezgjan Alioski and Jack Harrison are the only outright wingers available.
On current form, Bowen is going to be an upgrade over the two options which Bielsa has currently and given that he is 22, he has enormous potential to improve further. The Englishman can also play in more central area and his goalscoring record in the past two seasons has been fantastic. However, with some heavyweight clubs like Spurs and Everton in the mix, Leeds are definitely out of the race for Bowen at the moment.
