Swansea City winger Daniel James might have played down the chance of him jumping ship in this transfer window but that hasn’t dampened Leeds United’s resolve to land him as latest reports from the Mirror indicates that the Whites are going to put in a bid for the Wales international this week.
Reports add that the Welsh outfit can demand as much as £5m for their winger whose contract expires in the summer of 2020. James started off this season slowly but has become a crucial part of Graham Potter’s side. The winger has managed one goal and three assists in 17 appearances.
His numbers might be slightly underwhelming, but his overall contribution has been noticed. The 21-year-old got his first international cap in November last year when he appeared against Albania.
The reports also add that the Whites are not looking to pay over the top in the next few days in the transfer window. Therefore £5m for relatively unproven talent could be a bit too much for the Yorkshire club. However, it is clear that United are looking to bolster their squad as they have struggled with injuries so far.
The Championship table-toppers have only signed Kiko Casilla in the ongoing transfer market and not adding any more reinforcements can come back to bite them later on in the season. Therefore the club should look to pull off a deal for a winger and even a midfielder in the next few days.
Reports from Leeds Live earlier suggested that Swansea would demand £2.5m for their 21-year-old winger, but now it seems like Graham Potter is going to play hardball as the latest report say that the English manager is set to demand £5m for him.
It is never easy doing business in January as the clubs are often reluctant to sell their players midway through the season. With Swansea back in the mix to fight for the playoff spots, the manager wouldn’t want a player like James to go away.
James is not a readymade star and he would definitely take some time to realise his true potential. However, given the lack of depth and injury concerns, the Whites can probably do with almost anyone who can play down the wings at the moment. With his increased price tag, it remains to be seen whether Bielsa would look to spend that much. We should have our answer soon as the Yorkshire outfit prepares to put in a bid for the young winger in the next few days.
