Polish media outlet Przeglad Sportowy reported in December that Leeds United were interested in signing Ruch Chorzow’s talented 17-year-old midfielder Mateusz Bogusz. The Polish second division club recently put out a tweet and gave a clear indication that the Whites are in negotiations with them.
The translated tweet says, ”The purchase offer of Mateusz Bogusz submitted by Leeds United F.C. We are waiting for the draft transfer agreement.”
This could very well turn out to be the second signing of the winter transfer period for the Whites. The Polish youngster is regarded as one of the top talents of his country, and he should definitely be happy about getting a chance in one of the historic clubs in the UK.
Bogusz is a central midfielder but can play as a defensive midfielder or even as an attacking midfielder. United recently parted ways with Lewis Baker after Chelsea decided to recall him back as he was unable to get much game time.
Injuries and departures have depleted Marcelo Bielsa’s option in midfield, and the club is yet to replace Samuel Saiz. Pablo Hernandez, who is predominantly a right winger, has so far filled in the attacking midfielder’s role and it seems like the Spaniard is going to continue in that role if United don’t go on to sign any new midfielders.
The 17-year-old is regarded as a special talent, and United might have a real gem on their hands. However, given that Bogusz is unproven and even untested at the top level, he is unlikely to make a significant impact in his first season. The fans would also want to have someone who can have an immediate effect on the first team, and at the moment, Bogusz’s signing looks like an underwhelming one given the senior team is in desperate need of reinforcements.
Leeds United have the knack of promoting young talents and trusting young players has served Bielsa well so far this season. However, as the title race tightens up, the club would need experienced heads to see them over the line. Let us not forget that Bogusz is yet to play outside of Poland, and it would be tough for the youngster to have any major impact this season. But given his talent, we expect him to train with the senior players as at just 17; he is already an established member of the Polish second division outfit.
Former Whites scout Jakub Bokiej also posted his views on Twitter and said, ”Great signing for Leeds United. One of the most promising youth players in Poland.”
Therefore it seems like the West Yorkshire outfit are going to have a proper talent on their hands. However, it remains to be seen how soon the youngster would start producing results at the top level once he completes his move to Elland Road.
