It was a hard-fought contest at the Wembley Stadium as Tottenham Hotspur edged past Chelsea by a single goal in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg. The Blues fought well but were not able to get anything past the Spurs defence throughout the match. The lack of a top quality striker once again haunted Maurizio Sarri’s team as he had to leave Alvaro Morata out of the side due to an injury.
Kepa Arrizabalaga committed a foul on Harry Kane in the penalty box as VAR was referred to award the penalty to the north London club in the first half. Kane made no mistake in slotting the ball past the Spaniard and helped his side put one foot ahead in the race to reach the final of the competition.
Here is how the Chelsea players were rated from their defeat against Tottenham Hotspur.
Kepa Arrizabalaga: 5
His massive mistake cost his side the first leg of the semifinal matchup. Could have done better to hold his position and parry the ball away as Kane was not in the best of position to slot the ball past him in open play. Picked up a yellow card for the foul as well.
Cesar Azpilicueta: 7
Good on the run and in the defence as well. Did his best to keep Alli quiet.
Antonio Rudiger: 6
Good composed performance in the second half after Kane got the better of him on a few occasions in the first.
Andreas Christensen: 6
Defended well but squandered probably the best chance of the match to get his side back into the game.
Marcos Alonso: 6
Made some good runs into the danger area with the ball but was not able to deliver telling balls to the forwards.
Ross Barkley: 5
A mediocre performance as he was kept busy chasing the ball by Sissoko most of the time.
Jorginho: 6
Kept finding space to initiate attacks in the second half with his passing. Had a lacklustre first half.
N’Golo Kante: 6
Tried his level best to get the ball up the field and had a high ball possession in the second half. Had a go at goal in the first half to pull out a good save from Gazzaniga.
Willian: 5
Kept teasing the defenders but could not deliver the final ball into the danger area.
Callum Hudson-Odoi: 5
Nothing special from the youngster.
Eden Hazard: 6
Could not get past the big Colombian Sanchez. Took a few knocks as well.
Substitutes
Pedro: 5
Was ineffective throughout his time on the pitch.
Mateo Kovacic: 6
Did well to open up spaces in whatever time he had on the pitch.
Olivier Giroud: NA
Played too little to warrant a rating.
