According to a recent report by the Mirror, Chelsea have enquired about the availability of Bayer 04 Leverkusen wide man Leon Bailey. In a recent interview with SportBild, as translated by the Mirror, the Jamaican’s step-father Craig Butler, who is also his agent, shed some light on the player’s future and said, “I am very happy that this change has come about. Leon did not develop under Heiko Herrlich,”
“For Leon it is very important that he enjoys football, he lives alone in Germany, the family is in Jamaica, and if Leon does not have fun, it kills him.
“Top clubs have come forward, Real and Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Roma, and in recent months they have been surprised that Leon plays so seldom, wondering why a top league player like him is suddenly sitting on the bench.”
Butler’s recent words will be encouraging for the Pensioners and their chances of landing the player in the near future. However, with so many other top clubs also interested in the Jamaican international, it could be difficult for Sarri to orchestrate a potential deal for the talented winger.
Bailey has failed to hit the heights of last season and has often flattered to deceive with his performances on the pitch this season. The Kingston born talent has featured in 23 matches for Leverkusen this term, scoring just one goal while creating five assists across all competitions.
Bailey is blessed with outstanding ball control and can make some lung-bursting dribbles down the wide areas. The Jamaican has a knack for scoring and creating goals which he showcased at the BayArena last season. Although, there are still some concerns over his ability to adapt to the physicality and high intensity of English football.
The addition of someone of Bailey’s potential will be a great coup for Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea. The Italian manager have got the likes of Eden Hazard, Willian, Pedro and Callum Hudson-Odoi in his squad right now who are all fighting for a place in his first-team.
The potential acquisition of the Jamaican starlet would bolster Sarri’s attacking options significantly and add more competition for places within the Pensioners squad. Thus, the West London outfit should go all out to secure his services in the near future.
